Photo gallery: Filipinos observe Holy Thursday amid lockdown

Churches were closed, religious rites were broadcast online, and the faithful stayed home in silence as the predominantly Catholic Philippines observe the Holy Week under lockdown.

In the capital Manila, the homeless and the poor became part of a Catholic Holy Thursday ritual to remember Jesus’ washing of the feet of his apostles.

In many parts of the country, priests go around villages carrying the Blessed Sacrament as the faithful kneel in prayer along the streets.

For Filipinos, this is the first Holy Week they will be observing the rituals from the safety of their own homes.

There were no religious procession of images, no church visits, and no colorful reenactments of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
