Pope Francis to celebrate Mass with Myanmar community in Rome

Pope Francis will celebrate Mass with people from Myanmar in Rome on Ascension Sunday, May 16.

The Holy See confirmed the schedule in a telephone call to representatives of the Myanmar community on April 28.

“(The) pope will preside the Holy Eucharist with Myanmar Community on Ascension Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Rome time, (02:30 p.m. in Myanmar), May 16, 2021, St. Peter’s Basilica,” read the message.

A group of Catholic priests and religious from Myanmar in Rome wrote a letter to the Holy See on March 31 to request for a chance to celebrate the Holy Eucharist with the Holy Father.

“We know that you are praying and kneeling with us in the presence of the Lord to stop these inhuman and brutal acts in our country,” read the letter from the priests and religious.

“Our community would be consoled to have a Holy Mass with you (if possible, in St. Peter’s Basilica) to pray and kneel with you in the celebration of the Eucharist,” it added.

There are over 50 priests and religious from Myanmar who are studying or working in Rome while over 100 consecrated and lay people in Rome have worked in Myanmar.
