Sisters, nuns, call for day of worldwide solidarity and prayer

A global Catholic body of sisters and nuns has called for an international day of solidarity and prayer in the wake of the new coronavirus pandemic.

“Now is the time for each one of us to respond to the worldwide coronavirus crisis by being in solidarity with others, especially with those who are most vulnerable and most at risk. It is the time to follow the directives provided by the World Health Organization and our respective governments,” read a statement from the International Union of Superiors General (UISG), a Catholic organization representing about 600,000 Catholic women religious from 80 countries.

The statement, signed by UISG president Sister Jolanta Kafka RMI, invited all member congregations to make March 22 “a day of worldwide solidarity and prayer,” particularly for those directly affected by the new coronavirus pandemic.

“It is a special time for prayer and for witnessIng through practical solidarity and awareness, our responsibly to care for one another,” the statement read.

“This extraordinary time provides space for acts of generosity and expressions of gratitude especially to whose who are in the front line caring for the sick and those engaged in research projects searching for remedies, and those at work in the public services.”

The statement continued that everyone, everywhere should know that they are in “the thoughts and prayers of sisters worldwide.”

A prayer called “Lockdown” has been made available in four languages.

As of March 19, 220,327 new coronavirus infections and 8,983 deaths had been registered in 176 countries and territories worldwide.

Pope Francis said that these difficult times have also provided an opportunity for people to show a deeper, more concrete concern for each other.
